Awakening Curiosity

is our May theme

“Changing your mind is one of the hardest things a human being can do. It isn’t hard because new evidence is rare or because learning is unpleasant: it’s hard because beliefs don’t just live in the intellect. They live in identity, community, memory, and pride…

The quiet courage of changing your mind lies in its humility. It requires acknowledging that your understanding was partial, that your perspective was limited, and/or that the world is more complex than the story you once told yourself…

Children do this naturally. They revise their understanding constantly because they aren’t yet invested in being right; they’re instead invested in figuring things out.”

– Thom Hartmann

Announcements

Important Announcement from the Board: Remember that our annual congregational meeting will be immediately following the service on Sunday, June 14th. We encourage you to attend to hear reports of church business, vote on next year’s budget, new trustees, and next year’s special giving recipients. We are required to have a quorum at the meeting – we’ll need at least 23 members present.

If you would like to see the agenda and documents in advance of the meeting, there will be paper copies available one week in advance. Please reach out if you’d rather receive a digital copy.

If you plan to attend the meeting virtually, please let a Board member know and we will send you a Zoom link and digital version of documents.

If you’re considering becoming a member of the church, the only requirement is to attend an informational gathering and be welcomed in a church service. The upcoming meeting is on Saturday, May 23 from 10am-2pm and includes lunch. Rev. Dan will give an overview of UUism and our congregation and then members of church committees will share what they do to put our faith in action. Please contact Ann Green or Megan Blackshear from the Membership Committee to reserve your place.

Auction News & Update: Another successful and fun auction is wrapping up and we are very grateful to everyone who worked on this project and participated in bidding.

You will be contacted soon to let you know what you have won. You can write a check or pay with cash at the schoolhouse after service on May 10 or 17 and claim your item(s).  Also, please pick up items you donated that didn’t sell on those dates.

Thanks again, everyone!!

UUA General Assembly Registration is OPEN! The dates for GA are June 14-21. It will be virtual this year, so everything will be online. GA is a great way to learn more about what is happening in the denomination and to hear some really great speakers and presentations on a wide variety of topics. We are allowed 2 delegates who are eligible to vote on issues during the business meetings, so we need folks to fill those positions. For more information, please contact Rev. Dan and visit www.uua.org/ga/registration

Seeking Worship Associates: Are you interested in trying your hand at being a Worship Associate? It is easy and very rewarding. There will be Worship Associate training on Sunday, May 31 right after church. The training session will be conducted by Darrin Palmer and Cory Page. If you have questions, ask Darrin, Cory, or anyone on the Worship Committee. We would love to have you become part of the team!

Lunch With the Minister:  Rev. Dan will be hosting the next Lunch with the Minister on Friday, May 22 at 11:30 at the Bone Island Grille in Vandercook. Come and enjoy casual conversation, good food, and a well-deserved break!

Worship Committee seeks speakers: Do you have an idea for a service, or a willingness to take us on your spiritual journey? Or do you know someone in the community who would? Please contact Darrin Palmer or another member of the Worship Committee. They are happy to help create a Sunday Service!

The church phone number is 517-295-3290.
