Environmental injustices occur when local communities disproportionately bear the burden of the costs of production while not sharing the profits. We can respond and correct such injustices and anticipate and prevent them through proactive planning and organizing.
One potential threat identified in Jackson County is a large proposed hog finishing facility near the village of Parma. Public comment is being accepted on the facility until September 27. Additional opportunities for public comment are likely.
UUCEL members can help communicate potential risks by learning about Right to Farm laws, CAFO application processes, and discussing the risks with agencies that provide oversight.
