“Ending Cash Bail”

Masks are optional. In person or live on Facebook.
This service will be led by Guest Speakers Machelle Pearson and Jennifer Teed, with Worship Associate Sharon Pedersen. Masks are optional, and people can attend the service in person or watch live on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/LibertyUU . — Participants will hear about Michigan Liberation, a statewide network organizing to end the criminalization of Black families and communities of color in Michigan, and find out how they can become involved in the organization. Machelle Pearson will share what she’s working on as an advocate and leader in the area of criminal justice reform, as well as some of her personal experience with the system that led her to this work. Incarcerated as a juvenile at 17, she spent 34 years inside Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility. — Jennifer Teed, an organizer with the MI UU Social Justice Network, will talk about efforts to end cash bail, a significant barrier for low-income individuals and families. They will also update attendees on the Michigan Black Mama’s Day Bail Out, a national effort to pay the bail for Black mamas and caregivers, so they can spend Mother’s Day home with their families–“where they belong!,” says Teed.
